We’re excited to announce we are using ID NOW COVID-19 tests, from Abbott Labs at our Woodbury Urgency Room. ID NOW is the fastest available molecular point-of-care test for the detection of novel coronavirus (COVID-19), delivering positive results in as little as five minutes and negative results in 13 minutes. Prior to ID NOW, we were required to send our specimens to external labs for processing.  This process was time-consuming and results were returned in 2-5 days.  We hope our patients find this as an extreme satisfier.  Patients will have their results before they are discharged.  No need to worry and wait days for your results.

According to a press release from Abbott:
Molecular testing technologies help detect the presence of a virus by identifying a small section of the virus’ genome, then amplifying that portion until there’s enough for detection. This process can cut testing wait time from hours, if not days, to as little as five minutes for positive results and 13 minutes for negative results. When not being used for COVID-19 testing, ID NOW is leading molecular point-of-care platform for Influenza A&B, Strep A and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) testing. Our platform holds the largest molecular point-of-care footprint in the U.S. and is already widely available in physicians’ offices, urgent care clinics and hospital emergency departments across the country.

We began this new testing on June18th. We’re now able to give patients test results right away, similar to how we deliver results for strep throat or influenza.  Patients do need to be seen by a provider, drive through testing is not available at this time.  The hope is that with these immediate results, patients can better inform their families and friends of exposure and assist in preventing unintentional spread of the virus.  They will leave The Urgency Room with a clear plan from their provider.

The Woodbury Urgency Room is also opening up COIVID-19 testing to all patients, including those who do not show symptoms, but want to be tested. Opening up the testing allows us to further assist in preventing the spread.  As of now, our Woodbury Urgency Room is the only facility in the metro using the new ID NOW COVID-19 tests.

As a reminder, due to concerns about COVID exposure, The Urgency Room has a plan to better serve patients who have other, non-COVID health concerns. The Urgency Room has two COVID/respiratory-free sites in Vadnais Heights and Eagan.  These sites are not treating patients presenting with respiratory or COVID concerns. Physicians will continue to provide the full spectrum of care, including respiratory illnesses, at The Urgency Room’s Woodbury site.
